How to use the Budget Planner

Our free Australian budget planner helps you understand exactly where your money goes each month. Enter your after-tax income and all your regular expenses to see your monthly surplus or deficit, savings rate and a breakdown of spending by category.

The 50/30/20 rule

A popular budgeting framework is the 50/30/20 rule — allocate 50% of after-tax income to needs (housing, food, utilities, transport), 30% to wants (entertainment, dining out, holidays) and 20% to savings and debt repayment.

Tips to improve your budget

  • Review all subscriptions — the average Australian pays for 3-5 they rarely use
  • Refinancing your mortgage to a lower rate can save hundreds per month
  • Salary sacrificing into super reduces your taxable income and builds retirement savings
  • Paying more than the minimum on credit cards reduces interest significantly
  • Comparing energy providers annually can save $200–$500 per year
